July 2023 Garden Update
Hello fellow garden lovers!
I are happy to provide you with the latest update on our zone 3 garden as we are now in the beautiful month of July. Summer is in full swing but with a late freeze date and a ridiculous amount of mosquitoes this spring, we were a bit delayed in getting the plants in the ground.
Vegetable Garden
We have finally expanded the variety of vegetables. The soil in our area is dense, heavy clay with lots of rocks. We have been working our garden soil for 6 years - adding good soil, compost, wood ashes, leaves, wood chips, potash, picking out rocks and thoroughly tilling.
Full list of vegetables we planted this year:
Broccoli |
Brussels Sprouts |
Beans |
Cauliflower |
Cabbage |
Celery |
Acorn Squash |
Buttercup Squash |
Kale |
Zucchini |
Tomatoes |
Radish |
Tomatillo |
Peppers |
Carrots |
Lettuce |
Spinach |
Peas |
Herb Garden
Thanks to the warm weather and pockets of rain, the herb garden is flourishing. The fragrant basil, rosemary, sage, chive, thyme, and oregano plants are thriving and add a burst of freshness and flavor to our meals. We've been using these aromatic herbs to create flavorful sauces, broths and butters. The herbs have really taken off and are hard to keep up with preserving as the abundance is so great.
Flowers
The roses have been so incredibly bright and colorful. The pinks and yellows really stand out this year and more buds are coming. The clematis are again growing with the pine tree and have more flowers than one can count. I worried about storm damage to the blue indigo, but it has shown us there was nothing to worry about! It has doubled in size and looks amazing!
Thank you for reading our update, I hope to hear from all of you how your gardens are this year as well. Make sure to follow us on Gab, Minds and Twitter for pictures and updates!
